Pee-King Everest: How Climbers Are Giving the Glacier a Warm Welcome

Mount Everest has survived avalanches, blizzards, earthquakes and generations of ambitious humans determined to stand on top of the world. But apparently, the latest threat is something considerably less majestic: pee. A new study has found that human activity at Everest Base Camp—including thousands of litres of urine discharged directly onto the Khumbu Glacier—is contributing to local ice loss. The researchers estimate that human urine accounts for around 154 tonnes of melted ice and snow, while fuel used at the camp contributes far more to the overall human-caused melt.

The Summit of Bad Decisions

Every year, thousands of climbers, guides and support workers gather at Everest Base Camp, transforming what sounds like a remote mountain outpost into something resembling a temporary high-altitude township. There are kitchens, hot showers, internet, entertainment and even heated tents. In 2023, around 1,600 tents consumed hundreds of LPG cylinders along with thousands of litres of kerosene and gasoline. Apparently, conquering the world’s tallest mountain now comes with the unofficial requirement of bringing along enough infrastructure to make the mountain feel like a slightly inconvenient hotel. 

And then there is the bathroom situation. Climbers consume large amounts of water to stay hydrated at altitude, resulting in an estimated more than 6,000 litres of urine every day during the climbing season. While solid waste is collected and transported downhill, much of the urine ends up directly on the glacier. Scientists calculated that the heat carried by this urine contributes to approximately 154 tonnes of ice and snow melting.

When Nature Says “Icy,” Humans Say “Why Not Warm?”

For centuries, the Himalayas have provided the world with spectacular glaciers, snowfields and rivers. Humans, meanwhile, have apparently arrived with a different philosophy: if something is frozen, somebody will eventually find a way to warm it up.

The study suggests that fuel consumption is actually the much larger contributor to human-related melting. Heating, cooking and generating electricity at Base Camp produce substantial amounts of heat, with urine accounting for only a fraction of the overall human contribution. In other words, the headline may belong to pee, but the bigger story is humanity’s impressive ability to establish a miniature civilisation on a glacier and then complain that the glacier is becoming less glacier-like. Matrix News

This is perhaps the most Everest-specific version of modern convenience: travel thousands of kilometres, climb thousands of metres, establish a settlement on ice, install Wi-Fi, order hot meals, take a shower—and then discover that the ice is responding to the arrangement by disappearing.

Peak Hydration, Peak Irritation

The irony is almost poetic. Climbers are encouraged to drink plenty of water because dehydration at high altitude can be dangerous. Their bodies dutifully process that water and eventually return it to the environment. Unfortunately, the environment in this case happens to be an enormous frozen structure that would prefer to remain frozen.

Scientists estimate that the base camp produces thousands of litres of urine daily. So while climbers are trying to reach the peak, their kidneys appear to be conducting a completely different expedition: Project Melt the Middle.

No one can accuse the climbers of lacking commitment. They are apparently contributing to Everest’s transformation from both ends—burning fuel above and releasing warm liquid below.

Glacier Gets the “Yellow Snow” Treatment

The Khumbu Glacier isn’t just an attractive background for Instagram photographs. It is part of an important mountain ecosystem and contributes to water resources relied upon by communities downstream. The researchers therefore warn that continued human activity at the base camp could have consequences beyond making Everest slightly less photogenic. 

And that is where the joke becomes considerably less funny.

Climate change remains the dominant long-term threat to Himalayan glaciers. The new research does not suggest that urine has suddenly become the main cause of Everest’s melting. Rather, it highlights how concentrated human activity at Base Camp adds another layer of pressure to an already vulnerable environment.

Scientists have also observed that temperatures around Base Camp have been increasing faster than in surrounding glacier areas. The researchers argue that moving the camp onto more stable, ice-free ground could reduce the localized impact of human activity. 

Everest Base Camp: Now With Extra Heat

There was a time when reaching Everest meant accepting extreme discomfort. Today, the mountain experience can involve hot showers, electricity, fast internet, cafés and heated accommodation. It is almost as if civilisation looked at the most inhospitable place on Earth and said, “Lovely glacier. Shame if somebody installed a living room on it.”

The irony is that many of these comforts require energy, and energy requires fuel. The resulting heat contributes to local ice loss. The urine adds its own modest contribution.

So perhaps the real lesson is not that climbers are literally “peeing Everest away.” It is that humanity has become remarkably talented at taking every remote environment and turning it into a version of home—complete with all the energy consumption and waste-management problems we were trying to escape.

The Great Himalayan “Pee-Set”

Governments and scientists now face a rather awkward environmental management question: how do you regulate human waste at nearly 5,400 metres without making mountaineering even more difficult?

The obvious answer may involve better waste systems, improved infrastructure and eventually moving Everest Base Camp away from the glacier. Researchers say relocation could help reduce localised melting and make the camp’s logistics more sustainable.

Because if humanity has learned anything from the modern Everest experience, it is this: putting 1,600 tents on a glacier and then asking why the glacier is melting is probably not the strongest environmental strategy.

Everest was once a symbol of nature’s ability to humble humanity. Now humanity seems determined to return the favour—one heated tent, fuel cylinder and bathroom break at a time.

And perhaps that is the ultimate peak irony: humans climbed Everest to prove they could conquer the mountain, only to discover that the mountain’s greatest enemy may be the creature standing on it—armed with a water bottle, a fuel canister and an increasingly urgent need to find a toilet.

At this rate, Everest won’t need a new summit record—it’ll need a bathroom renovation.
