Imagine the Moon a few decades from now. Robotic vehicles are driving across the surface, astronauts are conducting experiments and engineers are constructing habitats. Naturally, properties near the south pole will command a premium because of their potential access to water ice. The phrase “waterfront property” will acquire an entirely new meaning. The housing market will have reached a place where the biggest selling point isn’t a swimming pool or a balcony, but proximity to frozen molecules that might one day become rocket fuel.
Earth Looks Small When You Start Fighting Over the Moon
There is something both impressive and deeply ironic about humanity’s renewed interest in the Moon. For centuries, people looked upward and imagined the Moon as a symbol of mystery, beauty and escape from earthly problems. Now we are preparing to take those earthly problems with us.
Borders, resources, strategic influence and international competition are all becoming part of the conversation surrounding lunar exploration. The technology is futuristic, but the political instincts are remarkably familiar. Once again, humans are looking at a valuable piece of territory and asking who gets access, who sets the rules and who gets there first.
Perhaps that is the real achievement of modern civilisation. We have learned how to leave our planet without necessarily learning how to leave our geopolitical habits behind.
